About Paul Jeffery

A Modern Jive Dancer with a passion for Dance Music. In my Blog I hope to offer reviews of the music we dance to, and the Classes, Freestyles and Weekenders we love dancing at.

I started dancing eight years ago at The Ceroc Passion dance class at Rolls Royce in Derby. I remember what it was like being a beginner and I always try to make the beginners classes now. I'm a great believer that we should support beginners through their first lessons, in the hope they will get the Modern Jive Bug.

Disco dancing in the early seventies I became a lover of Motown and Soul music. During the next ten years I also got into Northern Soul and Funk. In the eighties my dance hero was Niles Rogers of Chic.

I now dance at least three times a week in my local area of Nottingham, but also travel more widely around the country to write reviews of new venues.

With my Soul Boy roots I'm an advocate for more Motown being played at Freestyles.

Warning: School Reunions can be too much fun

Having more fun than is good for us Why is it that we are all having more fun now, than when we were free spirits in our early twenties, with little or no responsibilities.  There's just something about this wonderful dance scene, that means that most of us are having more fun than is good for [...]

Devon Velvet, Longdown Village Hall, Exeter

DJ Nick Stephens helps launch my Tea Dance Tour When I wrote my article Sunday Tea Dances grow in popularity back in April (see link below), I featured six venues that I had a vague idea about.  One of the venues I chose to feature was Devon Velvet and Nick Stephens gave me a lot [...]

By | October 5th, 2018|Articles, SILC and Blues, Weekenders|

SILC plays a big part in The Southport Experience SILC is all over Southport.  There are three different level SILC lessons, and the first of these - Foundation is one of the most popular of the weekend.  Most of the DJ slots in The Boudoir area are now branded as SILC Zone ones, and there are also specialised sessions [...]

Ceroc Devon: Marldon Village Hall, Torquay

By | September 29th, 2018|Freestyle Reviews|

I get lucky in Devon Last Sunday I got an opportunity to go to a Blues Tea Dance near Exeter in Devon.  That's a long way from my base in Nottingham, so to make my journey worthwhile I searched round Facebook to see if I could find something for the Saturday night.  I got lucky.  [...]

Let's not forget the people who ensure the vitality of this dance scene Please never take this wonderful dance scene for granted.  Behind its success and vitality lie the endeavours and passion of a lot of people.  The teachers who somehow get us through those first few lessons without quitting.  The DJs who play the [...]

Southport Splash 2018: Lucky Dip Competition

By | September 20th, 2018|Articles, Weekenders|

I gaze in wonder at the Ceroc Champs Entrants Back in May I made my first visit to the Ceroc Champs at The Watford Colosseum.  These are open competitions that attract the very best dancers from around the country, and include many of the teachers I'd seen perform in the Cabaret at Southport Weekenders.  What [...]

The Spirit of Southport September 2018 in Ten Top Tracks

By | September 12th, 2018|Music Reviews, My Favourite Tracks, Weekenders|

The Spirit of Southport lies in the music If you had to describe Ceroc's Southport Weekender to someone who had no idea what even Ceroc was, where would you start.  You'd probably begin by telling them that it involved round the clock dancing - it starts at three on Friday afternoon and doesn't stop until six o'clock [...]

Strictly Ceroc Bristol: SILC Sunday Freestyle

By | August 30th, 2018|SILC and Blues, Tea Dances|

Time to do it for real Prior to this SILC Freestyle, Caine Langford and Danielle Moore had run a two hour SILC Workshop (see link to review below).  Caine and Danni are fabulous teachers and I learned a lot about the SILC technique that was long overdue.  Now in the freestyle that followed I and [...]

Ceroc Southport Weekender: Sept 2018 – Planning my reviews

By | August 26th, 2018|Articles, Weekenders|

I need to plan carefully It's just four more sleeps until September's Ceroc Southport Weekender.  I've just had a weekend completely free of dancing so I'm particularly looking forward to this one.  But that's more reason to plan carefully.  Every time I go I promise myself I won't do too many reviews, and every time I [...]

Ceroc Surrey, Mytchett: Soul Night

By | August 25th, 2018|Classes and Workshops, Motown|

Fancy a dance class in Surrey Paul? Now that's a long way from Nottingham just for a class, so let me explain.  Because my daughters and Best Mate Neil live that way, I actually do a lot of dancing in Surrey.  Through my many visits to Ceroc Surrey's Byfleet venue I've actually got to know DJ  [...]
